Introduction by - Uffa Fox

Our sense of humour gives us a sense of balance and often saves us from defeat.

During this last war, after a terrific night's battering by bombs, a shopkeeper put a notice in his shop front (without windows or doors). It read:

OPEN AS USUAL

Further along the street another whose shop had also been blown wide open put his notice up:

MORE OPEN THAN USUAL

This spirit is in the Giles tradition.

It is the spirit that animates Giles's unique humour.

Those who own this book are meeting with a mind of exceptional vision—warm in its approach to life, penetrating in its observation, wise so very often in what it says.

It so happens that the theme of this splendid colour-cover is close to my own heart and life.

But then so much else of Giles is, too!
